Inspired by Welsh 'keeper Steve Williams, Drogheda United recorded their first win in eleven Premier Division games this season when a first half goal from Brian King gave them a deserved victory over Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds.
Not surprisingly Bray boss Eddie Gormley kept an unchanged side from the team that saw off Shamrock Rovers at the Tallaght Stadium last week. But it was Drogheda who took a shock lead on 31 minutes.
A neat interchange from Robbie Clarke to Dave O'Connor enabled the substitute to get in a cross from the left only for Jamie Duffy to miscue his effort. The ball fell perfectly into the path of Brian King to shoot past 'keeper Chris O'Connor from close range.
Drogheda did have another chance just before the interval when a James Chambers corner on the right was headed over by defender Alan McNally.
Bray looked the more adventurous side in the second period when first Paddy Kavanagh had a free just over the top from long range after a foul by Conor Kenna on Bray striker Paul Byrne.
Then Jake Kelly burst through the middle for the home side only to see his snap-shot effort well saved by former Bray 'keeper Williams.
Bray had skipper Chris Deans shown the red card by Welsh referee Dean John on 72 minutes after his assistant Mark Douglas had spotted a foul by the defender on Drogheda striker Jamie Duffy.
The Seagulls were desperately unlucky not to grab an equaliser on 78 minutes when a Dane Massey effort was again brilliantly saved by Williams after Gary McCabe had created the chance.
But Drogheda almost stretched their lead on 82 minutes when an attempted Massey clearance shaved his own crossbar after great work by Duffy on the left. Bray, down to ten men, did threaten late on, but there was no way back against the outstanding Williams.
